National Top 25 Team Ranking:
This high school football season marks the first time there is a new No. 1 team in the Top 25 rankings Bishop Gorman (Las Vegas, Nevada) tops St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) by beating former No. 1 Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) 28-0.
The Gaels opened the season with four impressive out-of-state wins and dominating in-state competition. They have outscored opponents 428-155 and are averaging 53.5 points per game.
Senior quarterback Micah Alejado, one of the front runners to be named National Player of the Year, threw for 2,066 yards and 26 touchdowns against zero interceptions. The Hawaii-bound signal-caller is completing 77.5 percent of his passes with 187 yards rushing and two more scores. The Gaels' regular-season finale against Coronado is Friday.
St. John Bosco (7-1) picked up its most impressive win of the season, dominating their Trinity League rival and handing the Kings their first shutout loss since 2011. The Braves jump six spots to No. 3 in this week's National Top 25. The offense featured a well-balanced attack led by senior quarterback Caleb Sanchez, and running backs Cameron Jones and Chauncey Sylvester. The Braves dominated on defense and allowed the Mater Dei High School football team to reach their red zone only two times.
This is the first time since 2015 that the Braves have won back-to-back meetings against the Kings. They won six straight against their opponents from 2011 to 2015. The loss dropped Mater Dei four places to No. 5.
Mill Creek (Houston, Ga.) moved up to No. 9 after a 31-24 win over Buford (Ga.) The defending Georgia state champions have won 15 straight games dating back to last year. Shane Throgmartin connected with Justin Content to go ahead with 1:20 left. The Hawks improved to 7-0 as time expired after Dylan Raiola forced an incomplete pass in the back of the end zone. Wolves drop 12 spots to 17th.
Expect fireworks in the Georgia playoffs beginning Nov. 10 as there are five teams ranked in the national top 25 that will be in that postseason bracket — No. 9 Mill Creek (Hoshton), No. 12 Colquitt County (Moultrie), No. 14 Walton (Marietta), No. 17 Buford and No. 18 Carrollton.
Norland (Miami) is the only new team to join the national top 25 after a 29-26 overtime win over Central (Miami). The Vikings improved this season to 7-0 and checked in at No. 15. They erased a 20-0 halftime deficit and sophomore Noah Seidan connected on a 38-yard field goal in overtime to beat the Rockets for the first time in school history. The loss drops Miami Central from the rankings as they are now the No. 1 team.
